Com service says Russians’ data unaffected in 2016 Uber leakage

MOSCOW, Dec 21 (PRIME) -- Personal data of Russians were not compromised in the information leakage from California-headquartered online taxi hailing service Uber in 2016, Alexander Zharov, director of Russia’s Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology, and Mass Media, said on Thursday.

“I say that Russian citizens were not exposed,” Zharov said.

In late November, Uber acknowledged that it had concealed a massive global breach of the personal information of 57 million customers and drivers in October 2016 without notifying the individuals and regulators.

Hackers stole personal data including names, email addresses, and phone numbers, as well as the names and driver’s license numbers of about 600,000 drivers in the US, while more sensitive information, like credit card numbers, was safe.

Uber also confirmed it had paid the hackers responsible U.S. $100,000 to delete the data and keep it a secret.
